John A. Pérez is one of California’s most dynamic political leaders.
As Speaker of the California State Assembly, Mr. Pérez spearheaded efforts that would end California’s era of chronic budget deficits. From 2010 to 2014, Speaker Pérez worked with Governor Brown and members of both parties of the Legislature to eliminate the structural deficit that had left California’s budget imbalanced for more than a decade. Resulting in back-to-back balanced, on-time budgets that raised the state’s credit rating and protected working families.
Speaker Pérez also authored several landmark bills, including the Middle Class Scholarship Act, which provided tuition relief of up to 40 percent for nearly 100,000 California State University and University of California Students. Mr. Pérez also fought for those who have served our country, expanding housing options for veterans and improving California’s ability to address veteran homelessness.
Speaker Pérez victories and accomplishments have received prominent national attention, including Mr. Pérez being elected President of the National Speakers Conference, an organization that brings together Speakers of State Houses and their chiefs of staff from across the country.
Mr. Pérez is also recognized as being one of the most prolific political strategist in the state. During the conservative wave of 2010, the California State Assembly was the only place in Country that grew the number of Democratic members. In 2012 Speaker Pérez made history by growing the Assembly Democratic caucus to a 55 member supermajority.
Currently, Speaker Emeritus Pérez serves as a Regent on the University of California Board of Regents after being appointed by Governor Brown in 2014.
